Geotechnical study

Before any construction or development project, it is important to study their adaptation to the ground, subsoil and the environment in order to ensure their durability. This is the goal of the geotechnical engineering carried out by the consulting engineering firm Mawudo inc. This firm offers its customers geotechnical studies based on :

  • In situ investigations (SPT, CPT, Ménard pressuremeter and Nilcon vane, etc.).
  • Laboratory tests (water content, grain size, sedimentometry, Atterberg limits, oedometer, description and simple compression on rock cores taken from boreholes, etc.).
  • Principles of soil and rock mechanics following the requirements of the National Building Code or the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual.
The geotechnical studies carried out are submitted to its customers in the form of preliminary and final reports.

The preliminary reports present :

  • The stratigraphy of the soils encountered in the boreholes,
  • The depth of groundwater,
  • Admissible bearing capacity (qadm) or Serviceability Limit States (SLS),
  • And the seismic classification of the site.
The final reports cover geotechnical recommendations regarding:

  • The design of the foundations (superficial and deep) of the planned buildings,
  • underground drainage,
  • The liquefaction potential of the site,
  • The seismic classification of the site,
  • The stability of the temporary excavation walls,
  • The construction of the slab on ground,
  • Backfilling of exterior and interior trenches,
  • And frost protection.

Slope stability

Due to its geological formation, the province of Quebec is frequently exposed to landslides that occur in clayey soils (unconsolidated deposits) commonly called "loam" and on the banks of waterways.</ h5>

During a landslide, the displacement of the soil mass at the top and in the slope can carry away the elements located on the moving portion of land. On the other hand, the impact caused by the spreading of debris can damage property and threaten the safety of people.

The aggravating factors or triggers of landslides (natural phenomena) include: the presence of erosion at the base of the slopes, the inclination of the slope, extreme climatic changes, glacier melting, liquefaction of the soil, the properties geological and geotechnical soils, groundwater conditions, human activities, etc. They are mainly observed in spring and summer when the water pressures in the soils are high and therefore harmful to the stability of the slopes of embankments. .

According to the requirements of the normative framework, any construction projected in the stress zones relating to landslides is prohibited. However, it is possible to lift these construction bans in these areas by carrying out geotechnical expertise whose conclusions meet the acceptability criteria defined in the regulations in force for the Regional County Municipalities (RCMs) of the province of Quebec.

The consulting engineering firm Mawudo inc.

accompanies its customers for any construction projected in the stress zones relating to landslides by carrying out:

  • In situ geotechnical investigations and laboratory tests,
  • Topographic profiles of the embankment,
  • Slope slope stability analyzes under existing and future conditions,
  • Pseudo-static analyzes simulating the effect of an earthquake on the stability of slope slopes.

Numerical modeling

Numerical methods are very powerful tools that can simulate the behavior of geotechnical structures. These tools are based on soil or rock behavior models that link stresses to deformations. These models can be simple or complex and incorporate the following parameters:

  • variety of materials,
  • complex geometry of structures and land,
  • generally non-linear behavior of materials (irreversible deformations).

The digital method makes it possible to clarify the technical and financial choices of the projects and to optimize them. It also makes it possible to provide solutions to problems that can only be dealt with using traditional methods at the cost of simplifications that are difficult to justify.

The consulting engineering firm Mawudo inc. uses the most recent calculation software (FOXTA, PLAXIS, CESAR-LCPC, GEOSLOPE SUITE, ROCSCIENCE SUITE, etc.) to carry out studies related to digital modeling of geotechnical structures.
